For the first time in the history of Glengoyne Distillery, whisky lovers will have the opportunity to purchase their very own cask. Glengoyne Distillery is to offer consumers the opportunity to acquire their own casks of Scotch, along with being part of the decision-making process in the maturation of their whisky.
A limited number of casks will be made available to purchase, with individuals able to make key decisions such as wood type and length of maturation, exerting a huge influence on the resulting malt.
Brand Manager Stuart Hendry, commented, "I am genuinely excited by what we are offering. It will really allow whisky lovers to come closer than ever before to their favourite dram and have a direct influence on the end flavour.
I am confident that it will be over-subscribed, which is why I put my own name down several months ago. For this filling I have selected a 2nd Fill European Oak Hogshead and will buy a different cask every year (wife permitting!)."
With the most extensive range of wood casks on offer, owners really will be able to choose a cask to suit their taste. From fresh bourbon barrels to the finest European oak and first fill Oloroso sherry butts, owners will have a range of 11 different casks to choose from (other distillery's only offer two choices).
Owners will then be encouraged to visit their cask as it matures. Prospective purchasers will also have the opportunity to "try before they buy" with a nosing session in the distillery's stylish Sample Room, which will help to give participants a greater insight into the maturation process.
Once bought, the cask owners will not be disappointed with their Malt. With the slowest distillation process in the world, the spirit has prolonged contact with the copper still which results in an upfront fruitiness to the Glengoyne malts - probably one of the reasons the brand has won so many awards.
The casks will be filled twice a year, once in Spring and again in Autumn. The first filling will take place on 25 April.
Initial costs start at £1200, covering the spirit, cask and ten years storage. There are a number of member benefits including complimentary Single Cask bottlings that are exclusive to cask owners, and discounts at the distillery shop.
