The Indianapolis Colts vigorously protect their image, working with police to confiscate counterfeit souvenirs and sending cease-and-desist letters to businesses that falsely imply a partnership.
With little fanfare, some 6,000 hand-numbered bottles of Maker's Mark -- a hand-crafted, small-batch type of bourbon distilled in Loretto, Ky. -- began showing up on shelves of stores in Indiana.
The bottles don't have a specific Indianapolis Colts or Super Bowl logo. But the bottle's neck -- usually a distinct barn-red wax -- is instead blue-and-white wax.
Maker's Mark's distiller, Bill Samuels Jr., said in a short statement via e-mail that the blue-and-white wax on the bottle is from the same batch produced shortly after the University of Kentucky won the men's NCAA basketball championship in 1996.
