Johnnie Walker from 1805 on sale | Print |  E-mail
Tuesday, 03 April 2007
A bottle of Johnnie Walker 1805 - one of only 200 in existence - is expected to fetch between £12,000 and £16,000 at Bonhams in London.

The special edition 1805 blend was produced in 2005 from whiskies that are at least 45 years old and from distilleries that no longer exist in to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Johnnie Walker. Just two hundred bottles were released to be presented as gifts to high-profile individuals who have made a significant contribution to modern life. But now one bottle is going on the retail market for the first time.

The tasting notes describe the whisky as being "soft and welcoming with ripe fruitness and vanilla sweetness," and say it is "truly exceptional." The bottle comes in a handmade Victorian-style writing case together with an antique nib pen in a nod to the era when John Walker blended the whiskies himself. And the successful bidder will also get a copy of an original recipe book handwritten by Alexander Walker - John's grandson.

The bottle itself features a gold bust of John Walker and the 'handwritten' words "The inventory of the stocks and effects of John Walker, November 1819" - the oldest surviving handwritten document held in the Johnnie Walker archives.

The bottle will go on sale next month as part of Bonhams' Sale of Fine Wine and Spirits and proceeds will be donated to the National Trusts for England, Wales and Scotland.
