Whisky was passed off as Scottish – Indian court | Print |  E-mail
Saturday, 27 May 2006
The Delhi High Court has handed down a victory to the Scotch whisky industry in its bid to protect its product from copycat Indian drinks.

The Scotsman reports the court ruled that an Indian-produced whisky called Red Scot could no longer be sold under its brand name as its label misled consumers. David Williamson, a spokesperson for the Scotch Whisky Association, said Scotch whisky by law must be produced in Scotland and is protected as a geographical indication under World Trade Organisation rules. Judge Madan Lokur said the words ‘Scot’ or ‘Scotch’ identified whisky produced in Scotland and no Indian manufacturer could use it to promote or market its liquor.
